Commission on the Status of Women

Description: Press conference held by the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women. Margaret Berry reports on their findings that Governor Ed King's budget has adverse effects on women in the Commonwealth. After they reported that information to Governor King, he disbanded the commission. They take questions from the press. Description: Video and audio drop out in the beginning. Governor Ed King enters room, sits at desk. Press takes pictures. King makes a statement on the Tax Cap bill. He signs the bill, with President of the Senate William Bulger and Speaker of the House Thomas McGee at his side, and hands out the pens. He holds up the signed bill. He ends the press conference. Press packs up their gear. Thomas McGee talks to a group of people. Reporter from another station does standup off camera and then asks McGee for his statement on the bill, which WGBH camera operator also tapes. Other reporters, including WGBH's Janet Wu, taking notes.

Mary Jane England

Description: Janet Wu interviews two social service professionals, John York and Dr. Mary Jane England, on the high number of uncovered cases of child welfare. York states that the Department of Public Welfare and the Office of Social Services have always been understaffed. He explains that there are approximately 200 new social services positions in the budget for 1980. Dr. England speaks on the current state of the social services programs in the Commonwealth.
