Rats

Description: Norway rats, bred in lab, in glass containers lined with wood shavings. Shiny dark brown-gray fur. One cleans and grooms self. They are kept for the purpose of testing rat poisons by public health department. Man pours vats of grain into mixer. Barrels labelled “poison.” Pail labelled “pest control chemicals.” Shelves stocked with sugar, vegetable oil, peanut butter, nutmeg, pet food. Posters explain how to avoid attracting rats.

Respiratory distress syndrome

Description: Dr. Mary Ellen Avery, pediatrician at Children's Hospital, talks about hyaline membrane disease and respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants. (Lung tissue is stiff, making breathing difficult, and can lead to broncho-pulmonary dysplasia.) Vitamin E as antioxidant is suggested as treatment in recent study at Yale New Haven Medical Center. Neonatal unit of extremely tiny babies in incubators with breathing apparatus.

Steve's Ice Cream, Somerville

Description: The original Steve's Ice Cream in Davis Square Somerville. Menu board. Old fashioned ice cream machine in window, churning with ice cubes, dasher scraped down with spatula. Steve Herrell, owner, peels bananas and purees them. Customer places order. Ice cream is squished with “mix-ins.” Interview with Herrell on FDA labeling regulation to list natural and artificial ingredients. Comments on using only pure ingredients and non-fat dry milk instead of casein substitute. Label on quart container.

W.R. Grace site in North Cambridge

Description: W.R. Grace silo tower, tanks, and industrial buildings in Alewife area of North Cambridge. Barrel tipped over on snowy ground. Smoke or steam issuing from exhaust stacks and vents. Corroded sign on post in ground “Danger Acid.” Pool of sludge adjacent to building. Big blue tank surrounded by rusted pipes. Indeterminate tan substance spread over ground next to bleachers. Interview with Mr. Stuart (of MBTA?) about chemical analysis of conditions on the future construction site of the red line extension tunnel. “We're getting strange high acid readings in the ground water” but not sure exactly what kind of contamination.

Walpole lock-up

Description: Interview with inmate at Walpole prison about lock-up of B section (maximum security). Filthy interiors of cell block, dirty showers, debris from meals accumulated on floor. Inmates hold mirrors out through bars to show reflection of their faces to camera. Swearing and commotion are heard in background; prisoners complain about conditions.

Description: State welfare office interiors. Receptionist takes calls on multiline rotary dial phone. Women workers at metal desks in groups of four. File cabinets stuffed with manila folders of paperwork. Form for assistance payments. Staff person talks to client/applicant in Spanish. Interviews with two supervisors about qualifications for social work jobs.
